It's been just over a month since I started school, which has been taking up most of my time. It is really odd to have such a fixed schedule when I am so used to doing things more on my own time, and the last few years I think I have really taken for granted all of the time I had to do the things that need to be done at a more leisurely pace. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Any free time that I do have is coveted now, and most of that time has been spent in the garden, which has been going on pretty much the same way as if I was in it all day, everyday. It is a nice thing to have a garden full of hardy plants, and I am really happy that I have always tended to be pretty laid back when it comes to weeds and critters in the garden. It is probably saving me from high blood pressure at this point. ;)</div>

While I did enjoy watching the musical ride, I was even happier to go around and "meet" some of the horses at the Knowlton Ride facility. There was one mare that I was particularly smitten by {the lovely chestnut below} who was so friendly I wish I could have stuck her in my purse and brought her home with me. Her companion is a lovely mare too.</div>

It turns out that my friendly chestnut is for sale and her name is Ginger. She is a 5 year old Hanoverian mare bred by the RCMP. If I had the money, time and space, she would be coming home with me! But since I don't, interested folks can find more info at the <a href="http://knowltonridgeequestrian.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/Catalogue-Spring-Herd-Reduction7.pdf">Knowlton Ridge "for sale" page</a>.</div>

The last few weeks have been a busy juggle of celebrating Bealtaine and preparing for some pretty big changes that are just around the corner {more on that in another post}. To make it a little more challenging, some of my Bealtaine activities had been waiting for the weather to comply.<br />
<br />
Even with the unpredictable weather though, I have been taking every chance to appreciate the natural beauty of this time of year.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
All of the critters are twitterpaiting and the plants are starting to peek up out of the ground, so I think that Spring is here...and boy has it been a long wait around these parts. Last year we were spoiled by an extra early start to the growing season, so maybe it has made this past Winter seem longer than it really was. A part of me thinks that we are a little behind though.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The one thing that I has kept me sane through the anticipation to get into the garden is my wee seedlings that are all doing well. Sitting on our window sills are gaggles of tomatoes, shasta daisies, heather, datura, wild tobacco, parsley, basil, foxgloves, mullein, poppies, and a few other pretties waiting to take their place in our garden. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The newest addition that I am perhaps most excited about is a small rowan tree that I ordered and am anxiously awaiting to get here. Last year I tried to start one from a cutting, which didn't work and all of our local garden centers only sell larger trees, so I decided to <a href="http://www.veseys.com/ca/en/store/floweringtrees/evergreen/mountainash">order one from Vesseys </a>{I think that they only sell rowan trees within Canada}. The sizes that they come in from there are 15 to 18 inches, which is perfect for me to keep in a large planter for a couple of years so I can take it with me should we be moving anytime soon. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have been busy with preparations for Bealtaine too, which I may celebrate a little late this year given how things seems to be coming along slower than usual. One thing that I am waiting on is my stinging nettle to grow a bit more because I want to make a <a href="http://edible-ireland.com/2012/03/29/irish-nettle-soup/">nettle soup</a> as part of our feast. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Preparations for a course that I am starting at the end of May has also kept me busy; it will be full time, which means that I will have less time for the garden than I would like. With this in mind, we have decided to keep it simple this year and put some new veggies and fruits that we were planning on trying this yearon the back burner. Hopefully we can try them next year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will snap a few photos of what is going on in the garden once there is more to see. :)</div>

With Saint Patrick's Day coming up, it is a good time to read some really great posts and websites that can be found linked at the Mo Thearmann blog in a post called <a href="http://mo-thearmann.blogspot.ca/2012/03/luck-of-irish-and-link-round-up.html"><i>"The Luck of the Irish" and a Link Round-Up</i></a>.</div>

Anyone who has been reading this blog for any considerable length of time will probably note that I have a bit of an addiction to thrift stores and yard sales. That is definitely not the most expensive and worst of habits, especially when you find items like these in one shopping trip!</div>

This post was kind of inspired by a former neighbour who had told her daughter that "gardening is for peasants" as I was digging up new beds for the home I am currently in. Having heavily manicured lawns and shrubs, and fancy plants like peonies are ok of course, as long as you hire a peasant to do the labour. Vegetable and herb gardens were way beneath her. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So here is my tip of the hat to the lowly plants found in the peasant gardens of yesteryear. ;)</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below you will find just a few of these plants that were historically grown and wildcrafted by the underclasses for food, medicine, industry, magic, and sometimes other uses. This is just to give folks an idea, should you wish to grow your own "peasant" garden.<br />

There is a couple of things going on locally that might be of interest to my regional readers! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow, Wednesday February 13th the North Bay Heritage Gardeners will be hosting one of their Free Evenings of Education. The topic will be "How to chose plants to extend the season" and will be presented by a very knowledgeable local grower, Lucy Emmott. The event is free, and is being held at Discovery North Bay Museum from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/heritage.gardeners#!/events/539350096098145/">Visit the event Facebook page for more info</a>.</div>

And I got this press release in my email box a few days ago from the <a href="http://www.northbayfarmersmarket.ca/">North Bay Farmers' Market</a>...</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>North Bay Farmers’ Market is moving! </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Once again, it is that time of year when the farmers, producers, artisans and crafters come out each Saturday to share local offerings with their community. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>This season we, the North Bay Farmers’ Market 2013 Board, are happy to announce the much discussed and anticipated move! The Vendors will be setting up at Lot #10 behind the Bus Terminal on Oak Street. In the past we have had over 30 Seasonal Vendors, with a long waiting list for those who were interested in a spot as an Occasional Vendor when the opportunity arose. We are excited as this new location will allow us to offer more Seasonal Vendor booths; there-by offering more of what North Bay has come to love from the Market, fresh locally grown products, food producers, artisans and crafters. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>North Bay residents will soon be able to wander through the Market, while catching up with old friends, listening to great live music and enjoying the fresh air. Beginning May 18th, the Market will be open every Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.– RAIN or SHINE through to Thanksgiving…now at the new location, the Oak St. parking lot behind the North Bay Bus Terminal, corner of Wyld and Oak Streets. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>Not only will the Market be able increase our Vendor numbers but we will also have considerably more convenient parking spaces. There is parking on the west side of the Discovery North Bay Museum, as well as parking to the east of the new Market location. Watch for signs to direct you… </i><br />
<br />

<a href="https://img1.etsystatic.com/005/0/7246623/il_fullxfull.387844025_hc4w.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="https://img1.etsystatic.com/005/0/7246623/il_fullxfull.387844025_hc4w.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks to a question from a customer a little while back, I have been trying to track down as much information as possible about the Blue Jay bush bean. This is a variety that I started growing in 2011, after <a href="http://nefaeriaofetsy.blogspot.ca/2011/03/squee-d.html">scoring some at a seed exchange</a>; the person who swapped them had done a trial run with them the previous growing season, so as far as I know they were the one to introduce this variety to my neck of the woods {from a preservation project just south of us}. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Besides some whispered rumours, I knew very little about the history of this lovely bean. So after some digging, I came up with a wee bit more, which I will share here. There are many other heirlooms that I adore, and it is my hope to spotlight more of them in the near future. Perhaps this will be a new "regular" feature on this blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>The Story</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Blue Jay bush bean has dark navy blue/sometimes almost black colouring with splashes of white or beige. The flowers are a lovely pink or purple which attract all sorts of pollinators. From what I understand it is Canadian in origin, and one of its parent plants is the <a href="http://www.motherearthnews.com/Organic-Gardening/2006-04-01/Three-Rare-Beans.aspx?page=2#axzz2Jvlwk0ev">Comtesse de Chambord</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is still a very rare heirloom variety that almost vanished. Thanks to a preservation project with <a href="http://www.seeds.ca/en.php">Seeds of Diversity</a> and <a href="http://everdale.org/">Everdale Organic Farm & Learning Centre</a>, gardeners will hopefully be able to enjoy these pretties for generations to come!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To read more about the history and preservation of the Blue Jay Bush Bean, check out the write up over at <a href="http://www.abeancollectorswindow.com/bluejay.html">A Bean Collector's Window</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Growing Conditions</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being a bush bean, there will be no need to trellis the plants and you could probably do well growing Blue Jays in large containers. Like with all bush beans, you need to grow them in full sun and in well-draining soil, preferably with a pH between 6.0 to 6.5. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Blue Jays seem to tolerate crowding fairly well I have had excellent harvests in both a hot and dry growing season and a cold and wet one. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some plants that are known to be good companion planting matches with bush beans are peas, radishes, roses, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, marigolds, strawberries, cabbage, beets, celery, eggplant, corn, sunflowers; avoid growing with onions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Planting</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Plant the seeds directly in the ground after the danger of frost has passed, 1 inch deep and 3 inches apart.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Care</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Personally I think that bush beans are one of the easiest plants to grow. While it is never good to neglect any plant, you are probably more apt to kill a bush bean off quicker by over watering than by missing a watering session or two. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b> </b>Should you decide to fertilize them {which to me is not necessary}, make sure that whatever you are using is not too high in nitrogen. Too much of that will mess with the pod setting. The only pest I have ever had any issues with when it comes to bush beans are earwigs {*grrr*}, but other ones to keep an eye out for are leafhoppers, aphids, and spider mites.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Harvesting</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The really wonderful thing about Blue Jay bush beans is that you can either enjoy them green or dried. Given that they are very prolific, someone who grows them will have a great opportunity to try them both ways! For green beans it takes about 65 days to reach maturity and 90 days for dried beans.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thecountrywitchscottage.blogspot.com.au/">The Country Witch</a> nominated the nefaeria blog for a Liebster Award. :)</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So you are probably wondering what it is, right? Well, the apparent history is traced over here at the <a href="http://sopphey.onimpression.com/2012/05/liebster-blog-award-origins.html">Sopphey Says blog</a>, and here is an explanation that I lifted from <a href="http://thecountrywitchscottage.blogspot.com.au/2013/01/i-got-nominated-for-liebster-blog-award.html">The Country Witch</a>:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"<i>For those bloggers and readers who are unfamiliar with this award,
“The Liebster Award" is given to up and coming bloggers who have fewer
than 200 followers. The word ” Liebster” comes from German and can mean
the sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, most beloved, lovely, kind,
pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome</i>.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
Dawwww....I don't know if those are true characteristics of mine, but I'll take it! <br />
So Rules are...<br />

<b>11 Answers to the 11 Questions</b><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
{It was not too long ago that I stopped using the term "witchcraft" and
"folk magic" interchangeably; so for clarity's sake, I will be answering
as a folk magic practitioner.}</div>
</div>
<ol>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>What book inspired you the most in relation to witchcraft?</i></b>
It would be impossible for me to choose just one book! However, right now one that I am turning to the most would probably be <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Healing-Threads-Traditional-Medicines-Highlands/dp/1841582778"><i>Healing Threads</i> by Mary Beith</a>.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>What is your favourite herb and why?</i></b>
This just might be even more difficult to answer than the first question. One of my favourites and one that I work with most often is the rowan tree. Besides being a real beauty and plentiful in my region, it draws in the birds, the berries make fantastic jellies and its magical virtues are many! :D
</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>What season gets you most excited?</i></b> Right now I am wanting to say Spring, but to be honest it would probably be the time between mid to late Autumn.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>What is your most favourite place in nature? </i></b> I have a few sacred spots, but no place quite tugs at me like the wood behind the old family farm.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>If you could be any witch in history, who would you be?</i></b> A wise woman who I think was very admirable is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biddy_Early">Biddy Early</a> {if someone were to have called her a witch, I am guessing that she just might have throttled them.}</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Wand or Athame?</i></b> Herb knife.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Who is more awesome – Willow or Harry Potter?</i></b> I am not sure who Willow is, but I think that the trees are lovely! :)</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Dawn, Dusk, Twilight or Night?</i></b> Dawn, I think.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Tarot, Oracle or Runes? Why?</i></b> I like my oracle cards, but I am probably most partial to my Ogham set.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><b><i>Who is your most favourite fictional witch of all time?</i></b> Weatherwax & Ogg!</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><i><b>If you could get rid of sparkly vamps forever, how would you do it?</b> </i> Naww, they have a right to exists, as long as it is not in my vicinity. { ;) }</li>
</ol>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<b>Your 11 Questions</b></div>
<ol>
<li>Sitting by a camp fire or sun bathing on the beach?</li>
<li> Your favourite poet?</li>
<li> If you garden {or could} what are your top three variety choices?</li>
<li>Would you be more likely to speak your mind and risk hurting someone’s feelings, or hold things in to keep the peace?</li>
<li>Mead, wine or whiskey?</li>
<li>What is one thing you never leave your home without?</li>
<li>If you could choose one lifestyle to lead {nomadic, homesteader, pop culture icon, etc.} what would it be? Why?</li>

This is a rather tardy post about a feast that I created for my Ancestors, in response to Ms Dirty's <a href="http://graveyarddirt.tumblr.com/post/37047789867/midwinter-magic-2012">Holy Supper Challenge</a>, which I also participated <a href="http://nefaeriaofetsy.blogspot.ca/2012/01/freezing-weather-warm-hearts.html">last year</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While during Christmas dinner food and drink were set aside for our Ancestors, I decided to set aside some more time and make something nice just for them. To make a rather simple feast complicated, my camera has decided to "eat" many of the photos taken. I took some pictures of everything that was made, but have somehow disappeared from my camera {along with photos of some pretties I took for the Etsy shop :*(}. Anyhow, the photos in this post are the best of the slim pickings. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over the last month or so I have been going rather ape shit in the candle-making department, so it was only proper that I made some more Ancestor candles in time for their feast. These ones aren't for spellwork or anything fancy, just to be lit while I am giving offerings and the like. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I have become quite fond of doing hand-dipped beeswax candles, although as I am sure you can see, it is not a skill that I have quite mastered yet. Hehe. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A few days before preparing everything, I found this awesome shortbread dish in a local thrift store. It is handmade by someone named Mabel and it cost me a whole 75 cents. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This little treasure put shortbread
on the menu list. I used a recipe for coconut and almond shortbread,
which turned out quite nice, although it was bitchy to get out of
the dish. The designs held up pretty good once I got the pieces out. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Also on the menu was mincemeat tarts, barmbrack, honey barley biscuits, red wine and vegetable shepherd's pie. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below is a recipe by my dear friend Rebecca Mullins, who published it in the Winter 2012/2013 issue of <a href="http://www.aliveandfit.ca/">Alive+Fit</a>. She has given me permission to share it here, and you can see previous articles of hers that I have shared on this blog {<a href="http://nefaeriaofetsy.blogspot.ca/2009/04/teas-for-hay-fever.html"><i>Teas for Hay Fever</i></a> and <a href="http://nefaeriaofetsy.blogspot.ca/2009/02/immune-system-boosters.html"><i>Immune System Boosters</i></a>}. <div align="center">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
{Serves four}</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<ul>
<li>2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled, cut into chunks</li>
<li>1/4 cup butter or <a href="http://www.earthbalancenatural.com/product/natural-shortening/">Earth Balance</a></li>
<li>1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced</li>
<li>2 parsnips, peeled, thinly sliced</li>
<li>2 cups broccoli, cut into flowerettes</li>
<li>2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, chopped</li>
<li>Pinch ground nutmeg</li>
<li>1 medium fennel bulb, cut into a 1/2 inch dice</li>
<li>2 stalks celery, diced</li>
<li>3 cups baby spinach</li>
<li>1 teaspoon sea salt</li>
<li>2 cups vegetable broth</li>
<li>1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Place sweet potatoes and salt in a large pot. Add enough cold water to cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer until the potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, in a large saucepan over low-medium heat, melt half of the butter. Add the onion and saute for 10 minutes. Add the parsnips, celery, fennel, broccoli, parsley, and pepper and toss. Add the broth, increase heat, and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. Add the spinach last and stir until wilted. Remove from heat. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the vegetables to a large casserole dish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Drain the potatoes and return to pot. Add the remaining butter and mash until smooth. Spread the mashed potatoes over the vegetables.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Set broiler on high. Broil until lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Sprinkle with nutmeg.</div>

Folks who have been following this blog for a while will probably know that I am quite a fan of the BBC shows <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Farm"><i>Victorian Farm</i></a> and <i><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwardian_Farm">Edwardian Farm</a></i>, so I was happy to see the <a href="http://www.tvrage.com/shows/id-32481/cast">old gang </a>back for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartime_Farm"><i>Wartime Farm</i></a>. After watching the first four episodes {of eight}, I am getting a new found appreciation of some of the perils that British farmers went through during WWII.</div>
<br />
You can watch all eight episodes on <a href="http://ww3.tvo.org/program/186675/wartime-farm">Youtube</a> and <a href="http://ww3.tvo.org/program/186675/wartime-farm">TVO</a> will have all of the episodes on their website. Below is a preview:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know that I haven't been posting as frequently about the garden as I have in previous years {well, to be fair I haven't been posting as much here at all}, but I decided to keep the traditional "annual garden report" going. So this is a post is an overview of the 2012 growing season.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was probably the most challenging growing season I have ever had, not only because we had a to start a new garden from scratch {that had really crappy soil}, but it seems that there was all sorts of diseases and infestations going around. A whole bunch of local gardeners that I spoke to had an over abundance of ear wigs, which is what hit us hard. They went to town on a shitload of our seedlings and young perennials, which my poor <a href="http://www.ontariowildflower.com/yukon_monkshood_keno.htm#top">monkshood</a> and <a href="http://ontariowildflowers.com/main/species.php?id=81">mayapple</a> never recovered from. :*( However, after a long battle and weeks of "trapping", almost all of the other victims flourished.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below you will see how our annual edible/useful plants did {to actually get this post published, I am not going to bother getting into the perennials}. As with other years past, I am the 1 to 5 rating system, 1 being absolute shit, 5 being fan-fucking-tastic.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Arugula </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Our New Sun arugula from <a href="http://seeds.soggycreek.com/">Soggy Creek Seed Co</a>. just might be bomb proof!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Beans {Bush & Pole}</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Our Purple Peacock and Scarlet Runner pole beans did very well, as did our Orca, Contender, and Blue Jay bush beans; our Tanya's Pink Podded bush beans were rather stunted thanks to the dastardly earwigs.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Beets</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. For the most part we grew our beets in containers and enjoyed them for their greens, and after thinning them getting nice big roots. The ones in the ground didn't do so well...{yes, thanks to the earwigs}.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Carrots </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. These guys were also mostly reserved for containers to avoid certain somebodies nomming them to shit. For the most part our carrots were piddly little guys.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Chard</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. We had a steady diet of chard all season long.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Corn</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. Just like other seasons past, my luck with corn is just not there. It is too bad, because I was really excited about the two heritage varieties that I got at <a href="http://nefaeriaofetsy.blogspot.ca/2012/02/seedy-saturday-haul.html">last year's seed exchange</a>, Pickaniny and Painted Mountain. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Cucumbers</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
3. Our Straight Eights had a set back thanks to you-know-who, so we didn't get to experience the prolific harvests that they are known for.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Kale</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>5. We stuck to Red Russian and Dinosaur kale, which never let us down!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Lettuces</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>4. We grew at least a dozen different types, and save for some bolting, all did very well.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Melons</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. These poor gaffers didn't stand a chance against the earwigs. They never made it past their first true leaves.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Mustard</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>4. Some minor issues with loppers, otherwise our mustard did awesome.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Nasturtiums</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>5. Both the vining and bush varieties grew like weeds.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Onions</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>5. Old reliables.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Parsnips </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Had to start them a couple of times, but had a pretty good harvest.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Peas</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. We had a plethora of peas from Spring to Fall.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Peppers </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Another crop that had to be started over, thanks to the earwigs. Due to this we only got a small harvest.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Potatoes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>5. It probably would be fair to say that we had a bumper crop, especially with our Russets.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Pumpkins </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Our Small Sugars never let us down! For 2012 we grew them on trellises and that made a big difference with the powdery mildew, which we had some issues with previous years.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Radishes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. Besides some bolting, they did well.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Spinach</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. Parfait!<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Sunflowers</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>3. I was so heart broken by the damage done by the earwigs. Once I saw that my sunflowers were being mowed down, it was war. I had to re-start them a few times, so they weren't as plentiful as they should have been.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Tobacco</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. Pretty much the same story as the sunflowers.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Tomatoes</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. We tried a few new varieties this year, but I think the Black Krim and Orange Blossoms did the best. <b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Turnips</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. We mainly grew our turnips in containers and got lots of greens. The roots were a wee bit smaller than other years.<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Winter Squash</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> </b>5. We grew a few varieties, mainly on trellises. I am in LOVE with Potimarron!<b> </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Zucchini </b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
5. We tried a new variety called Summer Ball, which can be eaten as a Winter or Summer squash. Love them! Our Strange Zucchini from Outer Space did well too. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
