Luverly of the Week {Fifth Edition}

This weeks Luverly is Belle

{photo taken by Reidl Romeo}

This bronze statue, Belle,

was installed March 2007 in Amsterdam, Oudekerksplein,

in front of the Oude Kerk,

in Amsterdam's red-light district De Wallen.

Inscription reads: "Respect sex workers all over the world."

This statue is in honor of sex workers all around the world.

p.s. Although this beautiful statue is in the red light district of Amsterdam, neither Laurel nor I are in favour of the legalization of sex work. Rather, we are for the decriminalization of all forms of sex work.

You can find out more about decriminalization here

Although I'm in favour of smashing patriarchy in the hopes that women who have no other options don't turn to sex work, I also support the decrim of sex work. This is a distinction that most people don't have a clue about.

As a person who's been a sex worker, not by choice, I think that decrim is the only way to keep STW's safe. I didn't feel safe on the streets of Vancouver and that's because I had nowhere to turn if something happened to me. I felt so vulnerable, almost like my bare skin was just a layer thick and the slightest harm to me would leave bruises.

How is the SPOC case coming along anyway?

Thanks for your input, Di!

As far as the challenge goes, it's still at the Ontario Superior Court level, and it is actually moving along smoothly.

Unfortunately with all challenges of this nature, it takes a looooong time to happen, but people are in it for the long haul. *winks*
