a new slate

The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months!
~Edward Payson Powell

I hope that all of our readers had a wonderful holiday season and that 2013 has been great so far! Yuletide over here was nice and low key, with plenty of food and spending time with loved ones. The year ended on a sad note though.

On New Year's Eve it was time to say "goodbye" to a beloved family pet who was very elderly and could no longer enjoy a reasonable quality of life. She was a sweet kitty who stuck around for about 18 or 19 years.

I would say that the holidays for the last few years have been met with some somberness in my family since my Grandparents passed away. This is why I like the new tradition of holding a feast for my Ancestors this time of year {inspired by Ms. Graveyard Dirt}.

For New Years I decided to add some Hogmanay traditions into the festivities, and I even saw some mummers oot and aboot! The rest of the night was spent reflecting on what I would like to see come to fruition in 2013.

I suppose it would be obvious that a part of this was daydreaming about this year's garden {on that...I do have a very tardy review of the 2012 garden to still share!}, which will likely be simpler than other years past. I will be taking a full time course over the entire gardening season, so it will have to largely fend for itself.

Well, I have garden porn {read: seed catalogues} to drool over, so I will leave it there for now. Many blessing to you all for the New Year! :)

Woodland Critter Tree

We were hoping to find another potted evergreen tree for this Yuletide that we could eventually replant. All the ones in our area have been sold, so we just decorated the Norfolk Island pine that we purchased last year.

Over the last year we kept "Norbert" as we would any other indoor plant and has done quite well. One thing we noticed with this type of tree is that you have to be pretty careful while decorating it as their branches seem quite delicate. So no crazy heavy ornaments or lights.

Besides pretties such as wee pine cones and acorns, old xmas card cut outs are light enough for the branches. Free, quick & repurposed...what's not to love? ;)

Moving 'Stead

{royalty free photo}

The home that we are currently renting is being sold, so we have been busy looking for a new place to put our roots til we're ready to finally buy our dream stead. We have found a little house where there will be enough outdoor space to take all my perennials to and to have a respectable veggie patch as well.

So, things will probably be extra slow around here while we make the transition.

*Double Squee* :D

More seeds to cross off the 2011 daydream list and there are some bonus pretties too!

The luverly folks Plant Trees, It's Self Defense sent us over a gaggle of seeds from across the pond...

They sent over Tree Lupins, Mammoth Russian Sunflowers, Bells of Ireland, Dill, Teasel, Tall Mangetout Peas, Sweet Peas, French Climbing Beans, Giant Red Mustard, Red Russian Kale, and Borage.

They also sent us a postie with stark and beautiful {Devon?} scenery, which now sits with our little collection of fridge pretties and oddities.

Last week I hit one of the local seed & feed shops in an attempt to placate the virus that I am sure all gardeners with long Winters suffer from. ;)

I picked up Mixed Double Hollyhocks, Dwarf Queen Asters, Jewel Mix Nasturtiums, Iceland Mixed Poppies, Red Oakleaf Lettuce, Tricolour Ensign Mix Morning Glories, Heavenly Blue Morning Glories, Bijou Sweet Peas, Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard, Purple Haze Carrots, Daydream Cosmos, and Early Sensation Cosmos.

A Cure for the Winter Blues Part V {Indoor Garden Edition}

A couple of years ago I went on a spree posting luverly peektures of gardens, to take a bit of the edge off of Winter {Container Garden Edition, Community Garden Edition, Cottage Garden Edition, and Herb Garden Edition}. Since I am pining again for the growing season, I decided to pair this measure with another one that I cling to in the heart of the deep freeze.

I hope that you all enjoy these pretties as I much as I do. Happy garden dreams! ;)

Some Treasures from Etsy

I wanted to share the most recent Etsy pretties that we got, because I think that you all should check out these wonderful shops! :)

First up are some pretties from Stephanie Lostimolo, who is a phenomenal artist. She was also a feature on our Luverly of the Week last year.

Generations, which reminds me of The Morrigan.

Which has found its place on the Macha part of my deity altar.

Next is a pretty from Creations in Barnwood. It is a veggie storage bin made from 200 year old barn board! My hubby got for me for Yule.

The last pretty is a gift that we bought for my wonderful father-in-law from The Brewers Market. The Crossroads Brewing Kit.
